Leaellynasaura was a genus of small herbivorous ornithischian dinosaurs from the early Cretaceous. It lived between approximately 118 and 110 million years ago. It was discovered in 1987 by Michelle Colwell at Dinosaur Cove, Victoria, during an excavation led by Tom Rich and Pat Vickers-Rich. The name means "Leaellyn's lizard" which refers to the daughter of the paleontologists who discovered this dinosaur.

He had big eyes that earned him the nickname "dinosaur of darkness". Its eyes were very good and even gave Leaellynasaura night vision. Leaellynasaura grew very rapidly during the first three years of its life and reached skeletal maturity at five to seven years of age. It was known to be one of the longest tails among dinosaurs, comprising more vertebrae than most other dinosaur tails. Oddly enough, Victoria was located in a polar region that was very cold during this time. However, these dinosaurs were able to survive and even thrive in cold environments. Thanks to its hair-bearing filaments and hair-like filaments, it had withstood cold snaps during the winter. It had deadly teeth and claws used for self-defense against predators. Mainly its food was low-growing edible plants such as ferns and horsetails.

Leaellynasaura was about 40 cm tall, 90 cm long and weighed 3 to 10 kg.
