Plateosaurus was a genus of Prosauropod dinosaurs known from extensive fossil material that lived during the Norian and Rhaetian stages of the Late Triassic period. These dinosaur fossils were found in Europe and had been found in more than 50 locations on that continent. Plateosaurus was one of the earliest dinosaurs that could have been ancestral to the giant sauropod dinosaurs due to its large size of later periods.

It grew about 8 meters long and weighed up to 1,500 pounds. It had a long neck, and bones that were robust and thick. It had a small, narrow skull and contained flat serrated teeth on the front and rear edges. It had 5-fingered hands and a large thumb claw that was used for defense or to pick up food. Its eyes were directed to the sides, providing a full view for observing predators. It also had relatively well-developed and strong forelimbs, much shorter than the hind limbs. It could have walked on two or four legs or mainly quadrupedal.

Plateosaurus were large herbivores that fed on plants such as ferns and cycads.
