Malawisaurus was a genus of titanosaurid sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Apto-Cenomanian ages of the Late Cretaceous in what is now Africa. It belonged to a group of sauropods called titanosaurs, which were similar to the better known sauropods but had even smaller heads, and very long, whip-like tails compared to Apatosaurus and Diplodocus.
This small, large dinosaur stood on four legs but would still have been among the largest animals in its habitat. It had a small skull, huge nostrils and a blunt snout, most likely the American sauropod Camarasaurus. It has an elongated vertebra in the middle portion of its tail that contributed to its great length. It had bony ossicles, called osteoderms, embedded in the skin like other titanosaurs. It was a herbivore that ate plants such as Araucaria, cycads, ferns, horsetails and ginkgo.
Malawisaurus was estimated at 16 meters and weighed about 10 tons.
The name Malawisaurus means "Malawi lizard" in reference to the place where it lived.
