The name means "Magyar lizard", the word "Magyar", a tribe of people who settled in Hungary in the 9th century. Ten individuals were found but no skull has been found.

It was unearthed in the Hunedoara region which is now western Romania. The dermal armor of Magyarosaurus was uniquely shaped and sized. The animal was thought to have a high metabolism but a slow growth rate.

Magyarosaurus lived in a humid environment, with rainy seasons along with the hadrosaur Telmatosaurus, the ornithopod Zalmoxes, the nodosaur Sturthiosaurus, the maniraptorans, the pterosaurs and euornithopods, as well as turtles, dromaeosaurs
