Aucasaurus was a medium-sized theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous. It was not a well-known dinosaur. However, it is quite famous because it is the only complete abelisaurid skeleton currently known. In 1999, it was first discovered in the lowlands of Argentina in a joint expedition.
The name "Auca lizard" comes from the Mapuche language in reference to the place where it was found. The skull found was crushed, leading to speculation that it may have been fighting a large herbivore, struggling for food or territory, or even attempting cannibalism. It probably died from the skull wound.
Aucasaurus was a carnivorous theropod that hunted different types of prey than its larger relative. It had low ridges over its eyes, not horns, like the Carnotaurus. The arms and two fingers were small but had no claws. Its skull was short and deep-snouted.
Aucasaurus had an estimated body length of 6.1 meters and weighed 1.5 tons.
