The three outer toes were used for weight bearing, and each was equipped with a large claw.

Yangchuanosaurus belonged to the superfamily Allosauridae that occurred worldwide from the late Jurassic to early Cretaceous. It had stalked its prey in herds and fed on the herbivores of its time, including the stegosaur Chungkingosaurus or even large sauropods. It was also found to have been a scavenger.

The skull of the Yangchuanosaurus was large, up to 3.5 feet long, with ridges and a bony knob on its snout. Although it was slightly smaller, but very similar to its close relative the Allosaurus.
