Saurolophus was a genus of large saurophilic hadrosaurid dinosaurs that lived in the Late Cretaceous of North America and Asia about 69.5 to 68.5 million years ago. The name Saurolophus means \"striated reptile\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was one of the almost complete skeletons discovered by scientists giving them a clear picture of its bony anatomy. It was one of the few dinosaur genera known from multiple continents. It was distinguished by a spike-like crest that projected upward and backward from the skull. Between its eyes, it had a large bony spike pointing backward over the top of its head. In the nose area, the front of this thin ridge covered a shallow hole. It was covered by a long, fleshy \"pouch\" of skin. He had inflated the pouch to blow the horn or to make a colorful display. In addition, it was used for the breeding season. The forelimbs were shorter and the hind limbs were long and well built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tail was long and held high off the ground and was a parity when Saurolophus walked or ran on its hind legs. Saurolophus had a cranial crest, which is present in young individuals but is smaller. It was long and herringbone-shaped and projected upward and backward at an angle of about 45\u00b0, starting above the eyes. It appeared to be a heat-regulating function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Saurolophus was the first duck-billed dinosaur to have a sclerotic ring, a ring of bones around its eyes. This dinosaur was estimated to be about 9-12 m long and weighed 1,900 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
