Procompsognathus was an extinct genus of coelophid theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Triassic Period, about 222 to 219 million years ago. It means "before Compsognathus" or "pretty jaw".

In 1909, Procompsognathus was discovered by Albert Burrer on the northern slope of the Stromberg region near Pfaffenheim in Württemberg, Germany.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine the exact identity of this dinosaur. The remains of this dinosaur were of low quality; however, it was indeed a bipedal carnivore that ate tiny animals such as insects, small mammals and other reptiles. But the big question remained: whether it was a late archosaur similar to the bipedal Marasuchus or a primitive theropod dinosaur. In addition, it had long hind legs, short arms, large clawed hands, a long slender snout with many small teeth, and a stiff tail.

They could grow to about 3.8 feet long, 10 inches high at the hips, and weighed 2.2 pounds.

Procompsognathus came from the late Triassic period, while Compsognathus came from the late Jurassic period. Both have the same size chicks but it was a larger species that was recently discovered.
Several things were still uncertain about Procompsognathus, but one thing is certain: this dinosaur was a carnivore that ate tiny animals such as insects, small mammals and other reptiles.
