Its fossils were found in Liaoning, China. As one of the smallest known non-avian dinosaurs, it had flight dinosaur feathers that possessed four, rather than two, wings. The microraptor's body was thickly feathered, it had long flight feathers on its legs and a diamond-shaped fan at the end of its tail.

Microraptor was the world's smallest dinosaur, weighing about 5 pounds and measuring 42-83 centimeters long.

Microraptor is known from hundreds of specimens that were discovered mostly in the Solnhofen fossil beds in Germany and in China. In addition, Chinese scientists discovered that these dinosaurs had thick, black, layered, shiny and iridescent feathers, which may have served to impress the opposite sex during mating season. Microraptor glided a short distance from tree to tree and probably flew. Microraptor's feathery hind limbs made it an extremely clumsy runner, but capable of leaping from high tree branches.

Microraptor generally hunted at night rather than during the day, eating the remains of birds, fish and lizards.
