Majungasaurus was a one-ton carnivore that lived in the Cretaceous period and inhabited Madagascar. A genus of abelisaurid dinosaur was briefly called Majungatholus, a name now considered a junior synonym of Majungasaurus.

It is one of the most studied dinosaur predators. It had a blunt snout and a single tiny horn on the top of its skull. The forelimbs were very short, while the hind limbs were longer and very stout. It had a broad skull, rough texture and thick bone on the top of its snout, and the single rounded horn on the roof of its skull.

Majungasaurus was more closely related to the Abelisaurids of India than to those of South America or continental Africa. It fed on sauropods such as Rapetosaurus. In its day it was called an apex predator. Once Majungasaurus bites its prey, it does not let go at all as its teeth curve backwards, and it has jaws made for grasping rather than cutting.

They were deadly animals engaged in bloody duels. They lived alone or in pairs. Majungasaurus lived in a flooded coastal plain cut by many sandy river channels with a semi-arid climate. A full-grown adult reached a length of 6 to 8 m and weighed 1,100 kg.
