Janenschia was a large herbivorous sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Tendaguru Formation of Tanzania, Africa, 155 million years ago. It lived in a very mild time, when sea levels were higher than now and there was no polar ice. Fossils were unearthed in places like Lindi (Tanzania). He was given the name Werner Janensch.

It was a giant herbivorous sauropod dinosaur estimated to have been about 80 feet long and weighed about 33 tons. It had a long neck and a long tail. It was a quadrupedal dinosaur and probably moved very slowly. Its hind limbs had claws and the thigh bone was up to 4 and a half feet long. It was covered with armored plates like some other titanosaurids, but there is no fossil evidence. These giant dinosaurs needed large, powerful hearts and very high blood pressure to pump blood down the long neck to the head and brain. They traveled in herds and have been solitary animals. Like other sauropods, Janenschia reproduced by laying eggs.

Janenschia had to eat an enormous amount of plant material every day to sustain itself. It could swallow leaves whole without chewing them and may have had gastroliths to help digest this stiff plant material.
