Huayangosaurus was a genus of stegosaurian dinosaur that originated in Middle Jurassic Asia. It was named "Huayang" (Sichuan) after the province where it was discovered and "Saurus", meaning "lizard". A group of Chinese paleontologists named it in 1982 as Huayangosaurus taibaii.

It had many primitive features. The skull had a small opening in front of each eye and another small opening in each half of the lower jaw. However, in stegosaurus, both openings were closed. Huayangosaurus had 14 teeth, seven sides on each side. It had forelimbs three-quarters longer than its hind limbs. In addition, its two rows of armor plates along its back were narrower and thicker.

In addition, this dinosaur lived in the land of lakes, rivers and lush vegetation. It was a herbivore based on its teeth. The armor plates on its back and the beak on the animal's tail would have kept its enemies away. On the other hand, it could also have been for show to attract its mates. Although the plates seem too thick, it could be used to regulate its body temperature.

The Huayangosaurus was a quadrupedal animal. It was estimated to have reached 4.5 m in length and weighed between 1,000 and 3,000 kg.
