Gorgosaurus means "frightful lizard". Its remains had been found in the Canadian province of Alberta and possibly in the U.S. state of Montana. It was a bipedal predator or walked on two legs. It had two horn-like protrusions on its head above the eyes.

It had large muscular legs that made it extremely fast, especially for a large animal. Gorgosaurus had a top speed of around 48 kilometers per hour. It was an apex predator that lived in a lush floodplain environment along an inland sea.

Gorgosaurus had been cannibalistic; it had hunted large dinosaurs such as hadrosaurs, ceratopsians and ankylosaurs. Dozens of large, sharp teeth lined its jaws to help it tear its prey apart. It had two toes on its forelimbs and was comparatively small.

An adult Gorgosaurus reached 8 to 9 m from snout to tail and weighed about 2.5 tons.

Gorgosaurus remains were found in places such as Alberta (Canada), North Carolina and Montana.
