The coelophysis was one of the first agile carnivorous dinosaurs found in the upper strata of the Triassic about 200 million years ago.

It was a small, fast-moving carnivorous dinosaur, only slightly larger than a turkey. This relatively small theropod scurried around what is now New Mexico.

This small predator had a long, slender tail and jaws filled with dozens of knife-edged teeth. The coelophysis' strengths included the speed and agility to catch a variety of animals such as insects and small reptiles. It probably fed on animals that were smaller than itself. And it was a diurnal predator that hunted by sight. Evidence showed that these dinosaurs hunted in packs.

The coelophysis was delicately built, bipedal with slender legs and three toes on the feet. They had a long, narrow head with large, forward-facing eyes. Studies show that these dinosaurs were superior to most lizards, and ranked with that of modern birds of prey.

The coelophysis was no more than three feet tall at the hips, nearly 10 feet long due to a long tail, and weighed between 15 and 20 kg. It most likely reproduced by laying eggs.
