Avimimimus was a recently discovered maniraptoran that lived in the late Cretaceous in Mongolia, about 70 million years ago. All four remains were found in Mongolia. In 1981, Russian paleontologist Sergei Mikhailovich Kurzano found Avimimus. The name means "bird mimic" discovered in Maniraptoran.

It was a small, lightly built theropod that may have had feathers. Like modern birds, the skull was short and bird-like. It had a long, toothless beak, a very short tail and very long legs. This dinosaur had a huge brain surrounded and protected by large bones. The forelimbs were relatively short and had small ridges along its arms.

Avimimimus was probably an omnivore; it ate small animals, insects, eggs and some plant material. It walked on two long, slender legs. It was a fast and agile dinosaur that ran as fast as an ostrich, reaching 43 mph.
