Achelousaurus was a genus of ceratopsid centroaurine dinosaur that lived in North America during the Late Cretaceous period, between about 83 and 74 million years ago. In 1995, it was discovered and named by Scott Sampson. The name means \"lizard of Achelous\" in reference to a river deity from ancient Greek myth - Achelous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achelousaurus was quadrupedal or stood on four legs. It was a herbivore with a parrot-like beak, a rough boss on the snout and two more behind the eyes, and two horns at the end of its long bony neck frills as in Einiosaurus used for defense, regulating body temperature, attracting mates, or signaling danger. It had a large nasal boss, as seen in Pachyrhinosaurus. Although Achelousaurus was not closely related to birds, it was a member of the Ornithischia or \"bird-aboard\" order of dinosaurs. The teeth were designed to grind fruit vegetables. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
